Camp Philosophy
When I ask campers, “How was Camp?”, they most likely say they had fun or that they enjoyed their experience. If I ask, “Did it help you become a better wrestler?” they would likely reply “Absolutely!”
It is our mission to make sure every camper goes home with a positive experience and with the tools to become a better wrestler. The Howell System Camps are unique. We feel like we give our campers the right combination of technique and skill development along with live wrestling in both team and individual settings. In addition, our camps give athletes the opportunity to participate in team competitions throughout the week. Here are some of the ways we provide all this for athletes:
- TEAM COMPETITIONS – Each wrestler is assigned to a team and has a personal coach for the week. The teams compete against each other in competitions such as relay races and dodgeball. Points are given for placement in these competitions. At the end of the week, the winning team receives the coveted CAMP CHAMP T-SHIRT!
- DUAL MEETS – Coaches for each team match their line up against other teams. Team scores are kept and are included in the as points in the week long competition.
- ONE ON ONE COACHING – Our format is unique. Some camps might advertise a quality athlete to coach ratio. However, the Howell System camps assign each athlete a personal coach to ensure they get that one on one instruction.
- A REPORT CARD – Not only does each camper have a personal coach, we send them home with a personalized improvement plan from his coach.
- CAMP T-SHIRT – Some camps sell these to campers. We give it to them.
- INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT – At the end of the week. The campers are paired up in an individual tournament. The Champions are recognized and given wall charts at the Award Ceremony at the end of the week.
- THE SYSTEM – Some camps throw technique at campers without connection. The Howell System is presented to campers with a systematic approach that allows wrestlers to apply all techniques with a very simple format. This system can be used by the beginning wrestler and used as a basis for the top level wrestler.
- CURRICULUM COORDINATOR – Each level (Advanced, beginner, Freestyle/Greco-Roman) of the camp is assigned an experienced curriculum coordinator. The coordinator incorporates the technique taught by each guest clinician into the “system” for campers.
- CAMP NOTES – Each camper receives a booklet with an outline for the camp instruction. Technique that is taught will be in the camp notes.
- FEATURED CLINICIANS – Each day there is a featured clinician that comes in to teach special technique. NCAA Champion, Sheldon Thomas, has been staple as one of the clinicians.
- FIGHT LIKE A GIRL – First ever Girls wrestling camp in Delaware. The Howell family has developed their camp with a unique blend of technique, competition and live matches with tournament competition. Now the Howells are offering that same formula for girls. Not only will girls get all the technique sessions that boys will get, but now they will get live competition with girls only and on a girls only team. Two of the camps Featured Clinicians are accomplished female wrestlers. Alyssa Mahan, 2x NHSCA All-American and collegiate wrestler at D I Presbyterian College will be teaching for two days. In addition, this year will also feature another home-grown product in Emily Thode.
Girls will join the boys for all of the technique and team competitions. However, girls will have the first ever ALL GIRLS DUAL MEET. In addition, the end of the week tournament will feature an ALL GIRLS DIVISION.
